Steelmaking coal is an essential ingredient in blast-furnace steel manufacture, producing steel used for critical building and infrastructure around the world. In Australia, we operate five steelmaking coal mines in Queensland’s Bowen Basin, and have additional joint venture interests in steelmaking coal and manganese, as well as copper exploration projects underway in North West Queensland and Western Australia.


Job Description
-The Safety Specialist - Investigations is responsible for ensuring that best practice investigation methods, processes, systems and tools are implemented across SMC and for ongoing coaching for safety professionals and leaders in how to undertake and implement corrective actions from quality investigations.

Key accountabilities:

  • Provide independent facilitation of HPI investigations for the Business Unit
  • Provide specialist, technical, or legal input into site investigations
  • Provide ongoing Investigation coaching for safety professionals and line personnel
  • Ensure correct application of Investigation tools on site and that corrective actions are assigned to address root cause
  • Participate in peer review of investigations and provide feedback to sites on investigation outcomes
  • Continually monitor for repeats / trends from investigations and provide feedback on intervention requirements
  • Support compliance with internal and external (legislative, regulatory, permitting) requirements

  • Qualifications
    -Tertiary qualification in an Engineering, Applied Sciences, Safety and Health or related field.
  • Formal training / qualification in Safety Investigation Facilitation, Human Factors/Human Behaviour will be highly regarded
  • Demonstrated significant practical safety experience
  • Detailed knowledge of Safety & Health systems and processes as well as a thorough understanding of operations (preferably within a mining context)
  • Demonstrable success in applying investigation principles to Safety and Health context
  • Demonstrable experience working in an incident investigation position at a project, operation or BU level in mining, oil and gas or other heavy industry
  • Track record of interfacing with and influencing colleagues at all levels and co-ordinating disciplines relevant to incident investigation
  • Knowledge of safety policies, procedures and the important role of consistently demonstrating required behaviours and championing safety values
